I found these comments interesting:
"Nick Carlin handled our opening book, taking advantage of material previously published by Jeroen Noomen, and did really well. All of our book positions were equal or better, and all were complex and offered plenty of winning chances.
Nick is from the new breed of computer chess opening authors, who rely on systematic, automated methods and on statistical analysis. He uses all of the available resources, from Jeroen's work to Playchess games to Aquarium editing tools to Polyglot. For this event, he made algorithmic innovations in the area of sharpening the book exit points – his aim was to drop Rybka off into rich positions with plenty of winning chances, and to prevent opposing authors from doing the opposite. Judging by the games, these methods work quite well."

We all know Rybka has a very good and Highly rated team. Who are the team members of the other engines, and what is their roll on the team?

Re: Rybka WCCC2009 Chessbase Review
Nick is a real asset to any team, he has been handling a lot of the book work for Rybka on many occasions along ofcourse Jeroen, and is usually running Rybka and booking for it if the tournament is on ICC. I have been lucky to have been sent his books to check out on Playchess a few times and they are extremely strong ... usually on good hardware they will quickly go over 2900. He has very good computer skills and managed to turbo charge a Quad running Rybka on Linux with large page files. He also has an unbeleivable database of games, and on several occasions when I thought I had found a strong opening novelty, I was politely shown that it had already been played in this or that game . Nick also has had great success in freestyle events, where he plays with the name Flyingfatman. Too bad he will be taking a hiatus from computer chess for now, but I am sure he will be back soon.

Any plans to get any titled players to help you with evals? I think GM Roman Dzindzichashvili was helping Bob with Crafty at one time. I believe Bob said his insight helped improve Crafty's play allot.Gian-Carlo Pascutto wrote:The Deep Sjeng team in 2009 was:

Rybka is an ambidextrous all-rounder. It handles all the pieces effectively.
I guess the trick to playing really well is improving all the piece placements where they will have a lot of scope while at the same time constantly making threats to maintain initiative. That's what Rybka does in the game against Shredder.

Rybka's strength comes from 2 things ... it has the best evaluation and it has the fastest search. The combination of those 2 things make it a formidable opponent.

Re: Rybka WCCC2009 Chessbase Review
I actually made a rather big and embarrassing mistake!
The Deep Sjeng team in 2009 was:
Gian-Carlo Pascutto (author)
Jens Heerklotz (tester)
Johan De Koning (operator WCCC/Blitz)
Richard Pijl (operator Olympiad)
Erdogan Günes (book)
Sujay Jagannathan (book)
Bert Rinzel (book testing)
Marek Baron (book testing)
I blame the mistake on the fatigue caused by ordering all those people around

Johan was in Pamplona for Amazons and was up for some chess too, so he offered to operate.
