Is Bison kosher ?

Post by Olivier Deville »

I was told Bison has similarities with Glaurung, and I am not smart enough to check it myself.

Shall I let it play in my tournaments or not ? Some expert advice would be very helpful.

Well, I am not an expert, but I would give it a chance:
let it play against Glaurung a few games, and if the score is more or less equal, then delete it. You don´t need a new engine with Glaurung´s strength.

Thanks Slobodan for the hint. I have not made any strength test yet. I guess the similarities are based mostly on output, and not necessarily on strength.

By the way, I apologize for posting my doubts so openly, but I see no other quick way to solve the case.

It's too weak to be a clone of a strong engine like Glaurung.

I run a quick 18 games Olivier. 2/12. on two diff.computers.

Glaurung 16/18 15-1-2 82% +363

Bison 2/18 1-15-2 11% -363.

If it is a similar it is missing something. Bison only won 1 game in 18.

Best to you,

Gerold.

I do not claim that it is a clone of glaurung but I believe that I can easily make a clone of Glaurung that is weaker than Bison.

I probably only need to change some constants(for example I guess that if I change the value of pieces to be 0 then it may be enough).

Thanks for the test, Gerold :)

Yes obviously Bison is much weaker than Glaurung.

The confusion is understandable, for dragons are not kosher. However, bison chew a cud, have cloven hoofs, and can hybridize with domestic cattle. As long as it has been slaughtered in accordance to Jewish dietary law, a bison is kosher.

But what about Komodo dragons? Are they kosher? I don't think I've seen one in the TCEC, at least.

(This is fun! I wonder if I posted anything embarrassing so long ago?)
