Has anyone ever heard of an engine called Smash?

Post by bigo »

I was wondering what it's ratings is? This seems to be the perfect engine to play against. Although It is stronger then me, I feel that it is beatable and it's a pleasure to play against. It makes positional errors and slight tactical errors, not gross blunders like the chessmaster personalities. It is much like a human player. The person who reccomended it says it's between 2000-2200 elo, I'd like to verify this.

It is at the bottom of the CCRL rating list:

Code: Select all

100 Feuerstein 0.4.5.1 2177 +40 −41 46.4% +27.2 22.5% 222
101 BigLion 2.23w 2154 +40 −40 48.1% +14.2 22.3% 233
102 Monarch 1.7 2150 +35 −36 35.8% +124.5 20.9% 335
    Smash 1.0.3 2063 +48 −49 34.2% +123.3 17.0% 171
103 Marvin 1.3.0 2061 +42 −44 32.2% +133.7 22.4% 214
104 Clueless 1.4 2033 +41 −42 36.5% +105.8 17.4% 219
105 Micro-Max 4.8 2024 +38 −39 33.8% +121.2 23.3% 253
It is a good sparring partner for my 100-line engine micro-Max.

I dont have as many games as CCRL but it is rated way lower...Ranked 158, the huge variation in rating could be due to Elostat messing up the rating of weaker engines.

The rating list of CCRL is compressed nearly 20% compared to, for example, WBEC. It might indeed be a difference between different rating extraction methods. As most lists calibrate on the top engines, weak engines are usually rated higher at CCRL.

On the other hand, I did run micro-Max at ICC for a week, playing many blitz (5') and normal (20') games. For both these classes it obtained a rating of 2260 at the end.

It was much in demand, because indeed it seemed beatable, and occasionally lost a game. Opponents that played it kept coming back.

The latest smash version plays around 1800 Elo and I can confirm this fact from the games I've played against it,I can beat it easily in a 10 games match :!:

That might not mean a whole lot, as you are only a single opponent, and be especially experienced in dealing with computers.

I am not sure what all the numbers in your rating list mean, but if you group Smash with the other engines mentioned there, I think something must be wrong with the way you installed it. It is really incomparably stronger than most of those. The current version of micro-Max scores nearly 50% against it. And I have tested uMax against many of the engines on your list, during its development, and at the end it totally crushed most of them, to the extent that I had to replace them from the standard gauntlett, because playing them was basically a waste of time (contributing more to the noise than to the rating).

Sorry Dr. Weeb

But I find this very hard to believe, I'm rated 2032 fide and played two serious games with Smash and I lost both games 40moves 1hour.
Also I'm trying to rate it against several chessmaster 10 personalities and after 6 games it has a rating of 2180, I don't know of any MP version I'm using the single version, but it is by no means 1800elo.

If you are interested playing engines in that Elo range, you could also conside micro-Max, the World's smallest chess program, measuring less than 2000 characters of computer code...
