Hello Lyudmil , Well done, interesting opening book for engine tests , if You don't mind , I can take the .abk book and add some extra lines with 2 moves (4ply) including the f4 openings that are missing to make the total of the opening lines to 1000 lines like Larry proposed , and also I can play a little with the priority of the moves to give each move the proper weight and probability for the .abk book (ofcourse if someone want to make a tournament using all the opening set then the priority of the moves will be useless , but still can be useful when someone want to test engines using this book but don't want to run the whole 1000 position, then the most playable lines will be played more often after I change the priority of the moves)
so do I have the permission to do that Lyudmil ?

Answer: I consider them suboptimal, probably wrong, but in any case suboptimal against best play. White could probably easily draw with 1. f4, but only that. Maybe it is a matter of taste after all.wolfman wrote:Excellent work !
Question : do I miss the f4 openings ?

Are you Moroccan?
The Lyudmil Tsvetkov-Fauzi Akram opening book; sounds good.
You might do whatever with the book if it is for personal use, and the same regards of course everyone who would be using it. However, there should be someone who should take all the blame for the bad openings, and that is why I think I could add another lines to 1000 to make the book complete. It might take some time, but I think I could do that.
Please feel free to proceed with your own modifications, but if you offer it for public download, please specify your own contribution.

Re: 2 Moves Openings Book
Hi again,
as I see that some people are interested in the book, and even Larry Kaufman (why I would like to write Kaufmann with double n?) reacted that he could use the book, I took the pains in the hurry to complete the book to 1000 positions. I added 1.f4, 1. c3, 1. a3, 1.a4 and 1.f3 lines, to make the book more exotic and interesting. Still I think none of those lines is lost; later I might post some games with those lines. I would not vouch however that 1.e4 b6 is not lost for black, and therefore there are not such lines. White has some leeway while playing. The opening advantage might not be there, but the lines are still even, and that was the main purpose: to provide some variety of play in equal lines.
Now, I have entered the new lines in chesspad (thanks to Mark van der Leek for a wonderful tool), but my problem is to check for doubles, unify headings, as well as delete the remaining plus positions over 1000 after the check for doubles is done. I simply can not do that without having to read lots of manuals. So please someone (I would not have the courage to ask Adam again, but maybe Miguel or someone else will be so helpful again) help me with the above job, so that in the end we have a book of 1000 starting positions.
The download link to the completed pgn file is here: http://www.freeuploadsite.com/do.php?id=27609
I do not know if someone will be able to convert the pgn to other formats, I could do probably ctg, but my work is finished here.

Re: 2 Moves Openings Book
I will post here a couple of games I played against Stockfish (my testing ground) with some unusual openings, included into the book, and some openings that are also strange, but are not in the book. I played 6 games, 1 game per opening, with 1. a3, 1. a4, 1. b3, 1. h3, 1. b4 and 1. g4. The games with a3, b3 and h3 ended in a draw; the game with 1.a4 was lost by me in a completely equal situation; while I lost very quickly the games starting with 1. g4 and 1. b4. Of course, I am not an openings specialist at all, neither a strong enough player, and Stockfish also is not the absolutely perfect player, but the results at least confrim what I had already supposed:
- 1. a3, 1.a4, 1.b3 and 1.h3 are perfectly playable moves
- 1. g4 and 1. b4 are not good moves, there is not equality for white there
Unfortunately, I can not find currently the 1.b3 game, and am posting only the other 5. If someone gets different results with engines with these openings, please let me know. I would be happy also to see a human drawing against Stockfish or similar opponent with b4 or g4.
The games: (just as a curiosity, as someone might ask me, hey, why have you included such silly openings, while claiming the book is drawish)

You might however also say that I drew all the games I played yesterday, and lost all the games I am playing today, obviously not a very fortunate day for me...
Some diagrams to dissipate bad feelings:
[d]1r6/5p2/1r2pkp1/3p3p/p1pP1P1P/P1P2KP1/1P2RR2/8 w - - 0 50
The h3 story.
[d]6r1/pp2bk2/1q2p2Q/3pP3/3Pb3/P1P1B1N1/1P1R3P/6K1 b - - 0 35
The a3 story; Stockfish seems to misplay strange openings starting with a pawn push on the 3rd rank, like a3 and f3
[d]r2r3k/pb3q1p/1p1b1p1P/2p1pPp1/Pn1pP1B1/1P1P1P2/2PBN2R/R2Q3K w - - 0 30
The beautiful tale of 1. a4. Some say closed positions are bad and stupid, but I think they are very intriguing and frequently deeper.
[d]1k4r1/ppp3p1/1q3p2/4n1Pp/3b1p1P/P4N2/1PP2PB1/2Q3KR w - - 0 28
With g4 I am chanceless, hope someone does better
[d]4r1k1/1pp4p/5pp1/pP1pP3/n2P4/P1PB2P1/8/R5K1 w - - 0 26
With b4 I play even worse and even finally blunder a rook; but probably it is just the day
So much so. Any corrections of my openings understanding very much appreciated.
- 1. a3, 1.a4, 1.b3 and 1.h3 are perfectly playable moves
- 1. g4 and 1. b4 are not good moves, there is not equality for white there
Unfortunately, I can not find currently the 1.b3 game, and am posting only the other 5.

Re: 2 Moves Openings Book - the Final Version
Hi again.
Here is the final version of the 2 moves book, consisting of 1000 unique positions: http://www.mediafire.com/download/jskag ... LT_1000.7z
The download includes pgn, abk, bin, epd formats.
I must say that all the credit goes to Adam Hair who did the book in its first, second and third version, but also provided the different formats available! An enormous thanks.
I hope now Larry will be happy.
Please enjoy.
PS. If anyone wants to convert the final version to other unavailable formats and post the download links, that would be great.

Re: 2 Moves Openings Book - the Final Version
I noticed that most of the main lines are missing , is that done intented?
For examplein French : e4 e6 there is no d4 answer, or in sicilian e4 c5 there is not Nf3 ...
I think it would be MUCH better if You introduce the main lines and remove some very weak moves like f3 or others that I found , so that the test will be much more fair

Re: 2 Moves Openings Book - the Final Version
Originally, the book had these three lines:fauzi wrote:I noticed that most of the main lines are missing , is that done intented?
For examplein French : e4 e6 there is no d4 answer, or in sicilian e4 c5 there is not Nf3 ...
I think it would be MUCH better if You introduce the main lines and remove some very weak moves like f3 or others that I found , so that the test will be much more fair
e4 e6 d4 c5
e4 e6 d4 d6
e4 e6 d4 d5
The book also contained:
e4 c5 Nf3 Nc6
e4 c5 Nf3 d6
e4 c5 Nf3 e6
However, the book also contained lines like d4 d6 e4 e6 and Nf3 c5 e4 Nc6, which result in the same positions as e4 e6 d4 d6 and e4 c5 Nf3 Nc6. It happens that d4 and Nf3 appeared earlier in Lyudmil's book than e4 and survived the filtering process (removing transpositions so that each opening position is unique). Thus, many of the lines starting with e4 might be missing. However, they are still represented in the book because they resulted in the same position as an earlier move sequence.
I suppose that this makes the book less pleasing aesthetically, but it makes no difference for engine testing. However, if anybody would like to reorder the moves so that the more common move sequences are retained, I can breakdown the pgn and put it into a spreadsheet. Then the order can be manipulated and eventually put back into a pgn.
