Sharp Openings test

Post by Adam Hair »

I ran a small tournament with SF, Houdini, and Komodo to see how they handled openings that supposedly leads to sharp play with humans. I have little knowledge of opening theory, so I relied on what I read. I found 27 openings and then added 3 from Jeroen Noomen's Sharp Gambits pgn.

Here are the openings:

A few first pass comments:

Generally the engines played these openings better than I would have expected. I am sure the longer time control helped.

The Benko main line (A59) is bad for Black. Both games were drawn but I think a longer match would show a White advantage.

Stockfish played a very inferior line in one of the A58 games (5. .. e6).

Re your opening selection:

The main line of the Latvian is 3. Nxe5, which is probably better than 3. d4.

5. Nxf7+ is interesting in the Traxler - I think this poses more problems for Black, but is probably also still a draw.

The Traxler opening came from Jeoren's gambit pgn. The flawed lines are my faulty and underinformed selections :)

Thanks for the input, Jon.

very interesting lines. engines usually see gambits quite well, but, still, some positions are so complicated, that engines quite often miss critical theoretical continuations.

si, I would say, gambit chess is very funny, but I would not vouch top engines will necessarily decide the games the way they should be decided.

I have looked into the two won games in the Stoltz variation of QGD. Which is a very reasonable dynamically balanced opening
Four games where drawn but K102 lost two one with white against H5 and one with black against SF both were won with nice instructive play
I have sparsely commented them and you can reply them below

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

If anyone finds any of the games interesting please feel free to commit on them.
I have looked into the two won games in the Stoltz variation of QGD. Which is a very reasonable dynamically balanced opening
Four games where drawn but K102 lost two one with white against H5 and one with black against SF both were won with nice instructive play
I have sparsely commented them and you can reply them below

If anyone finds any of the games interesting please feel free to commit on them.
I have looked into the two won games in the Stoltz variation of QGD. Which is a very reasonable dynamically balanced opening
Four games where drawn but K102 lost two one with white against H5 and one with black against SF both were won with nice instructive play
I have sparsely commented them and you can reply them below

your hate for Komodo is equalled only by the good games you post. :)
I think he hates more the fact that the Komodo team never says Stockfish dev is better at decent time control. I think he actually like a lot Komodo, even if it is to see it defeated.

And to keep the compliments in balance here a nice win by K102 with black against SF8. A complex game where SF8 underestimated the black chances for promotion

makes just one little mistake (depth 30 not deep enough for SF here) but
enough to loose. Black is one pawn down but has a passer on d3 which really
looks dangerous. SF is optimistic and played the queen to g7 attacking rook h8
and heading for h-pawn promotion, but this is just too far away from pawn d3
to prevents its march to d1 28 Qg4 Qg5 and b4 would have kept the game in
