chess database updates

Post by BubbaTough »

Hi all,

I have been contemplating playing a little OTB chess again. How do people usually look up opponent games and search by position and such in a way that includes recent games? I don't mind paying a little if necessary either for an online resource, or something that updates a chess database stored on my computer.

Hi Sam,

Scid is free database software, and TWIC is (still) free (for updating your database). Not sure where you can get a free large database with quality games these days. ChessBase remains my favorite, however, if you're willing to spend some money.

Just checked out TWIC, great stuff! Is there any place I can get downloads older than 920 (06/25/12)? I have chessbase Big08, and ideally I would like to fill in from 01/01/09 - 06/25/12.

ICOfY Base
The ICOfY Base is a free chess games collection and can be downloaded by anyone. It can be used with most free and commercial chess programs, which support the PGN file format. Periodically more chess games will be added, existing entries will be revised and duplicated games will be removed.

The ICOfY Base chess games collection want to be an alternative not a replacement of the commercial products of Convekta or Chessbase. It just want to offer the chess players of all levels a free possibility to prepare for a specific opponent or an opening system. For this reason, the ICOfY Base chess games collection does not contain any short games with less than ten moves and does not include tournaments, places, or rounds.

ect...

Get It Now

20/04/2013 13.1.2 Update (22,569 Games - 8,655 Players)

The included PGN database (2.3 million games) is up-to-date till February 2013 and contains a position based index for instant results.

I have 2 types of pgn databases on my site for free download.

The "gm" databases have high QUALITY games between the masters of their time, and the games are long time control, at least 31 or 51 plies depending on the time era, blunder checked for 50 plies and filtered for technical errors. Double games (games with exact same moves of a prior game), Internet, correspondence, exhibition, rapid, blitz and playoff games have been removed. Games since 1981 have minimum elos of 2525 for one player and 2425 for the other. They have been recently updated.

The "eco" databases have a high QUANTITY of games, of varying quality.

More details in the readme which can accessed directly.

See "www" below.
