Congratulations to Houdini 3 x64 ! 37.0 points out of 42 games = 88.10% . Outstanding performance!
The rest of the crosstable is also quite intersting. Some participants could have a higher ranking, lost games because of engine errors (e.g. Chiron, Gaviota and Hannibal).
Hiarcs with 25,5 points! great performance .
Jonny seems a lot improved.
And so much more.
Thanks to all participants and all who had interests in viewing my tournament.
Happy new year
I would like to take the opportunity now that we can show games in the forum, to show the only loss of Houdini 3 in the festival tournament by Clemens Keck.
Equinox played a fine sicilian game in Karpov style with an nice combinatory finale.
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e5 7. Nb3 Be7 8. Be2
Be6 9. Qd3 Nc6 10. a3 O-O 11. O-O Rc8 12. Nd5 Bxd5 13. exd5 e4 {first new
position in my database, e4! with counterplay looks good and is better than
the earlier played Nb8} 14. Qd2 Ne5 15. Rac1 Qd7 16. c4 Rfe8 17. Nd4 Nfg4 {
black must exchange pieces, but white wont let this happen} 18. Bf4 Ng6 19. h3
N4e5 20. Be3 Nh4 21. Rfd1 h6 22. b3 Bf6 23. Kh2 {Black has less space and must
wait how white plans to continue. In four consecutive moves Houdini now plays
with same black rook. Meanwhile white can make progress with a majority attack
on queenside as seen more in these kind of Sicilian openings.} Rb8 24. a4 Rbd8
25. a5 Rc8 26. Rc2 Rc7 {and that was four times. White has meanwhile made some
progress on black queenside and the majority break becomes more concrete} 27.
Bf1 Rf8 28. Kh1 {both programs find it hard to play with a plan, but white has
the better position and with his last move it prevents nasty black knight
checks on f3} Re8 {the rook returns to his former position} 29. Rcc1 Neg6 30.
b4 {the majority attack unfolds} Ne5 31. b5 Rec8 $2 {and already the decisive
mistake Houdini sees too late that logical looking b6 is threating. Giving
Houdini 3 enough time it comes up with g5 ! and that looks to be good enough
to hold the game (btw. remarkably; Komodo, Critter and Stockfish find b6 very
quick within 5-30 seconds where Houdini needs more than 2 minutes)} (31... g5
32. Rc3 Nf5 33. Nxf5 Qxf5 34. Bb6 Rce7 35. Rb3 Nd7) 32. b6 $1 Nxc4 33. Qb4 Nxg2
34. Bxg2 Rc5 35. Nc6 $1 {This strong white move, Houdini also finds after
longer thinking time than his rivals} Nxe3 36. fxe3 bxc6 37. Rxc5 dxc5 38. Qa4
$1 {Qxe4 also wins and looks more logical , but Qa4 is nicer because it has a
beautiful rook and piece sacrifice finesse after Rd8} Kf8 (38... Rd8 39. dxc6
Qxd1+ 40. Qxd1 Rxd1+ 41. Bf1 Rxf1+ 42. Kg2 {with a lovely position black has
rook and bishop but cannot prevent white from promotion and winning position})
39. dxc6 Qxc6 40. Qxc6 Rxc6 41. b7 $1 {this one is the killer} Be5 42. Bxe4 Rf6
{and Equinox won not long after this position} 1-0
Actually, the first new position wherefrom there is no return to book later through transposition is 26.Rc2. The first novelty move is 23...Rb8. Root game was Rybka33, Houdini 2.0-Salvation creed, Houdini 2.0, 1-0, 2011.09.30.

Hello Nelson
In the tournament only 5 bookmoves were played. Nice to see how deep engine follow theory.

I consider this as one of the major improvements in Houdini 3: even without a book it will play many openings in a very natural way, re-inventing decades of opening theory on the move.

Houdini and Equinox in this case, both engines.
Happy New Year, Robert, His work has been wonderful.

ah c'mon...
engines have been used for opening analysis, finding novleties, etc. for many years
Houdini does nothing special here (or did you include new opening theory innovation and novelty code)?
it is simply strongest the strongest engine at the moment (much of which was not programmed by you)...
nothing more nothing less
