I see a high degree of similarity in all the engines I use. Every single one plays chess, and none of them can boil an egg with any great facility... Seems a rather dubious coincedence.

Have you tried the chessbase article "Miscarriage of Computer Chess" Part 2? The bottom of the article shows how similar or different each software is (called "dendroites").
Since the internet is turning from a teenager to youth stage that we are running out of new ideas. I still believe someone will outdo Houdini 3 someday in the near future with or without (opening and endagame databases).
