I was wondering if you played 40 games with two top engines that the rating are close within a range of no more than 50 for instance between Houdini and Stockfish, but using only 20 openings up to 10 or 12 moves and then reversing the programs with the same opening.

Here I did a little experiment by using two close programs with different hardware but close in rating and as you can see first Umko destroyed Hiars 13.31 as White, then I played the same opening but gave Hiarcs 13.31 the white pieces and Hiarcs was able to draw the game even if Umko is rated a little bit highe. Therefore, the openings really influence the outcome of two engines that are close in rating even when the platform hardware used is different
